PSR-E273 is an ideal first keyboard for aspiring musicians who are just starting out.

One limitation with this keyboard is that it is not touch sensitive. In other words, it doesn’t respond to how fast or slow you press the keys; the volume stays the same no matter how fast or slow you press the keys. But if you’re on a budget, you’re better off with this one than nothing at all. It’s better to get this keyboard, see how you love to play, and graduate to something more advanced, than to buy nothing and never discover your passion for keyboard, piano and music in general. It also comes with an in-built Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S). Working alongside the 112 preset songs, the keyboard can teach you how to play, with 3 different lesson methods to choose from.

This is our most popular model. The most important feature in this keyboard:  touch sensitive keys. Mimicking the response you get from an acoustic instrument, the pressure you hit the keys with affects the sound. (e.g. press harder = louder sound, press softer = quieter sound). This is a skill you should play with from the start.

This keyboard has been designed for those learning to play. It has the Y.E.S system providing onboard lessons. It can also be connected to your computer or mobile device. The Yamaha Education Suite is great for teaching the basics at a pace you can understand.

In spite of the small size, it has decent inbuilt speakers and USB to host connectivity. This means you can send MIDI data and even audio to your laptop. You can even use this to control a DAW or virtual instruments.

The only difference between the two models is the key count and therefore price. The PSR-EW310 comes with 76 keys, as opposed to the PSR-E373’s 61. The internals and construction are otherwise identical so it comes down to if you just want more keys.

The PSR-E463 has all the functions and gadgets you’d ever want in a beginner keyboard. Like always, it comes loaded with voices, styles, the Y.E.S lessons, recording etc etc… But that’s not all! You’ll find registration banks, 6 track recording and DJ controls! These can be assigned to a variety of different effects, so you can play around even more. The 6W + 6W amplification provides a pure, powerful tone which amazes players for the size of the unit. Definitely one that I’d recommend if it’s in your budget!

A much better 76-key keyboard, although it doesn’t come with piano-styled semi-weighted keys, is the PSR EW410. This is the top of the line keyboard in the PSR-E series, much better than the ones we looked at earlier. Should you buy a PSR-E463 or a PSR-EW410? The difference is that the EW400 has 76 keys (not 61), a more substantial speaker system than the PSR-E463, as well as an AUX input.
